Why it exists

Travel software is used under the worst conditions any software faces: one hand free, a poor connection, an unfamiliar place, and a decision that has to be made now.

Most tools in the category optimise for breadth of features and degrade badly under exactly those conditions — a spinner where an answer should be, or stale data presented as current.

Orbit is built the other way round: a small surface, quick to operate, with state that is explicit about how fresh it is.

    The app is opened on a platform, in a queue, or on the street. An interface that assumes two hands and a settled posture has already lost.

    Roaming, hotel Wi-Fi, a train tunnel. Software that treats the network as reliable produces a spinner precisely where the answer was needed.

    The app distinguishes between what it knows, what it is fetching and what it last saw, so a traveller is never shown a stale value as though it were live.

A small surface, deliberately

Orbit does fewer things than the tools it sits beside. That is a real loss on a feature comparison and a real gain at a train station, and the second setting is the one the product is for.

Show what is known, not what is hoped

The app distinguishes fetched, fetching and last-seen, and says which it is showing. This means admitting to staleness in the interface rather than hiding it — less confident, and correct.

One constraint modelled properly

Schengen allowance is tracked because it is the rule that actually decides where a continuous traveller can go next. Choosing one such constraint and modelling it well costs the breadth of covering every jurisdiction shallowly.

Speed as a budget, not a phase

Interaction cost is decided before a feature ships rather than profiled after. The price is that some features do not ship, which is the point of having a budget.
